Lots of Fun to be had at Aberlady Primary School Health Week
In May Aberlady Primary experienced the excitement of celebrating all that is healthy. The pupils kicked off outside with the sun shining for a whole school aerobics session. From that moment on things didn’t stop with the opportunity to do hockey, rugby, short tennis, dance, karate, ball games, athletics, judo, taekwon-do, cricket, golf, swimming and boccia. It wasn’t all physical as some of the younger pupils also experienced relaxation, which may have came as a big shock to many parents! The pupils enjoyed eating and making fruit kebabs and smoothies, learning about dental hygiene and they enjoyed talks from psychiatrist Dr Dereck Dickson and Dr Alexa Hughes. Its not just Jamie Oliver who encourages your kids to eat healthy, your Active Schools and Health Promoting team do it with style! The whole school then went to see the Masai Warriors down at the community centre and the nursery enjoyed stories from Book Start and yoga with Tattie Bumpkin.
If you want to know more about some of the above mentioned activities please do not hesitate to contact Caroline Kaye Active Schools Coordinator 01620 894 817 for more details.
A huge thank you goes to all the club coaches and parents who made this week a huge success and so much fun.
All Jumping for Joy at Law Primary School
A MASS aerobics session was held under the watchful eye of East Lothian’s education chief, Don Ledingham to mark the award of a Healthy schools Stage 1 Accreditation. In order to achieve this standard, pupils and staff identified six areas of health as a focus for improvement. These included investigating becoming an eco school, reviewing the whole school health curriculum, ensuring there is a whole school personal safety programme, improving the dining experience, enjoying a health week and promoting the health and welfare of all the staff. This is great education for the kids as well as being fun and helping their fitness. You may have seen the fantastic press this event got in the local paper
After the presentation all of the staff and pupils took part in a whole school aerobics session lead by Caroline Kaye (Active Schools Coordinator) followed by health assemblies and they then finished off with a whole school power walk round the school playing fields.
Kings of the castle – Dirleton
Dirleton welcomed a second castle to the village this week, with the official opening of a £32,500 revamped playground, complete with a castle-shaped, multi-play climbing frame. Not quite “Historic Scotland status” but certainly much more fun, the new play facility was presented to pupils of Dirleton Primary School at a reception by the Dirleton Village Association (DVA), which spent 2 ½ years orchestrating the project.
I declare this play area open: - Pupil Daren Kellet, 12, officially opened the new play park at Dirleton; with a little help from Dirleton Village Association chair Nigel Bruce.
Athelstaneford Primary kick of their health week with a sponsored walk
The rain stayed away on the 18th May long enough for the whole school including the nursery to take part in the sponsored walk. Emily and Alistair both P7 organised the event by sending out letters, sponsor forms and maps to all the pupils in advance. A big thank you goes to Linda Gibson and Wendy Pollock for helping them. Lots of parents joined in and helped at the walk to make it a community event. All the pupils had a great time and have been busy counting all the money they have raised for the school. Another fantastic learning experience as well as good exercise and lots of fun.
Well done to all. Let’s hope the combination of continued education, healthy diet, exercise and fun activities are continued in YOUR schools for YOUR children.
