Active Schools in the Dunbar Cluster
February 2007
The main aim of Active schools is to give school-aged children the tools, motivation and opportunities to be more active throughout their school years and into adulthood. These opportunities are available before, during and after school as well as in the wider community.
Welcome to the Active Schools Dunbar Cluster Newsletter. The Active School Coordinators in the Dunbar area are Katie Forsyth and Ruth Johnston who work on a job share basis. Katie works Mondays and Tuesdays and is responsible for Dunbar Primary and Ruth works Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and looks after East Linton, Stenton, Innerwick and West Barns Primary schools. We hope you enjoy reading the events and activities taking place in the Dunbar area.
Volleyball Club
P6 children at East Linton and Dunbar Primary Schools have been taking part in a weekly volleyball club based at Dunbar Primary School on Mondays at 4.30pm. Children from all the cluster schools are welcome to attend, please contact Katie Forsyth to put your name down. On 6th December members of the club took part in a volleyball tournament at Meadowmill Sports Centre. The teams that took part played very well, particularly as they were up against P7 teams. Well done to them! As with many of our clubs, we would be unable to run it without the help of volunteers Jack Albano and Eilidh Anderson, so many thanks to them.
There is also a P5 club starting this month at Dunbar Primary school run by a parent volunteer, Steve Hanmer. He is a very experienced volleyball coach so we are lucky to have him supporting this club.
Basic Moves
Basic moves aims to encourage basic movement competence and develop positive attitudes to physical activity amongst P1-3 children. It is currently running in Dunbar, East Linton and is soon to start on the 20th of February in Stenton. We are currently looking for volunteers to take Basic Moves Training for East Linton PS and West Barns PS. The training will take place in February/March ’07, please use contact details below for more information.
Walk to school week
Many children across the cluster took an active part in Walk to School Week last term. As a way of congratulating all the children for their efforts, they were rewarded with a swimming voucher each to use during the Christmas break.
Innerwick Health Week
Innerwick PS held a Health Week last term. All pupils at Innerwick took part in a range of activities from an early morning walk each morning to a range of sport, dance and general active fun. Some parents donated a large amount of healthy snacks and fruit in order to make smoothies and encourage good eating habits. Let’s hope that some of the activity and healthy living can be maintained into the new term.
Athletics
Dunbar and Stenton pupils took part in the Athletic festival at Meadowmill Sport Centre on the 31st of January. Events included the javelin, long jump, triple jump, relays and obstacle race. A great time was had by all and we hope it encouraged the children to try athletics again in the future.
There will be an Athletics club on Friday afternoons starting the 23rd of February held at Dunbar Grammar School. It is for primary 7 pupils from any school in the Dunbar cluster. A fully qualified Athletics coach will take the sessions and the five sessions cost £5. There are limited places, please contact the details below to book a place.
Ready Steady Bike
The Ready, Steady, Bike activity cards have been developed by the SCU/Scottish Cycling Development Project as part of a grassroots scheme to teach essential cycling skills. This programme can be run in a school playground or playing field and is aimed at P5 children. We are currently looking for volunteers to attend Ready Steady Bike training this term, please contact Katie Forsyth or Ruth Johnstonif you would be interested in attending.
Top Play Club
Many thanks to the parents at Dunbar and Stenton Primary schools who have provided Top Play sessions for P3-4 pupils. Mark James, a fully qualified TOPS leader, will be starting a new 5 week block of TOPS in West Barns starting on the 20th of February, every Tuesday 3.30-4.30pm in the gym hall. If you wish to book a place for your child please see the contact details below.
The volunteers have been running sport and games based clubs after school. If you would be interested in volunteering to help at your child’s school please get in contact. The TOP programmes create opportunities for young people aged 18 months to 11 years to enjoy participating in sport and physical activity. The Youth Sport Trust coordinates the programme with financial support from Sportscotland. Teachers, volunteers and parents who take part in training run the classes. The resource consists of colourful resource cards and a big bag of colourful, user-friendly equipment.
Clubgolf
Clubgolf is the most far-reaching Junior Golf development programme undertaken in Scotland. It aims to create the opportunity for “every child in Scotland to have an introduction to the game by the age of 9”
If you would like to be a Clubgolf coach you don’t need to be a golfer, just enthusiastic, friendly and keen to encourage children to be active and enter into a sport for life! We are offering members of the community the opportunity to train to support class teachers during school hours with delivery of firstclubgolf sessions.
