S2 Hockey Champions

The Preston Lodge second year girls went to the S2 East Lothian Core Programme Tournament with high expectations. The girls only had 7 players and decided to play without a goalkeeper. In the tournament there were teams from North Berwick, Dunbar, Ross High and Knox Academy.

The last game against Dunbar was a convincing 4-0 win with an all out attack performance so they got their goal tally up as high as possible. Excellent performances form the 7 girls (Amie-Jane Russell, Chloe Galloway, Chelsea Anderson, Shannon Langlilands, Cara Ross, Emma Shepherd and Sasha Tulloch) who deserved to take the trophy home. WELL DONE!!

The Musselburgh Active Schools team have just launched their newly branded ‘Bounce’ transition club with a range of activities that will span the length of the academic year.  The club will allow P7 pupils the opportunity to gain access to Musselburgh Grammar Schools excellent sporting facilities.  The classes will run once a month and will be delivered by qualified coaches, staff members and senior sports leaders with activities including Boxing, Trampolining, American Sports and Dance.  S1 pupils currently at the school will be encouraged to attend the activities to support P7 pupils, make new friends and enjoy the new activities on offer.  In addition to all the fun and games there will be a strong message about leading a healthy lifestyle.  Ashley Oswald, Active Schools Primary Coordinator for Musselburgh, is positive that the new club will encourage primary school pupils to make positive choices for leading a healthy and active lifestyle. In addition, to having lots of fun and making new friends.

Having a Ball in Musselburgh!

Active Schools provides a wide variety of opportunities to get school aged children ‘more active more often’.  One of the most popular ways in which active schools achieves this is by getting children and young people involved in football.

There are numerous extra-curricular Active Schools football clubs running throughout the Musselburgh Primary Cluster whether delivered by parent volunteers, coaches or members of school staff. This academic term a large number of new football sessions are kicking off for all age groups. At Campie Primary School children from all years can’t wait to perfect their dribbling skills with four new football clubs enjoying an overwhelming response! With more football opportunities at Whitecraig Primary School, the Musselburgh cluster can boast football on offer for all P5-7 pupils!

Not only can upper primary school pupils enjoy football participation, new fun packed Mini Kickers clubs are on offer at various schools. The Scottish FA Mini Kickers programme was developed for nursery and P1-2 children, focusing on a range of activities both fun and developmental. The framework of activities specifically focuses on improving basic motor skills, coordination and social interaction. Existing Mini Kickers club at Loretto RC Primary School delivered by two parents has proved hugely popular and it looks like this success will be mirrored at neighbouring schools!

One of Active Schools key priorities is to encourage more girls and young women to participate in sport and physical activity.  As football is the fastest growing sport for girls in Britain Ashley Oswald, Active Schools Primary Co-ordinator is currently looking to provide more girls only football opportunities in the Musselburgh cluster. With a large number of girls at Campie Primary School enthusiastic to get involved, a girls’ only football club has become a permanent fixture at the school. Girls look out for more football sessions coming to your school soon!

JOIN THE JOGGING REVOLUTION!

Junior jogscotland is the junior programme to jogscotland which was established in 2002 by scottishathletics, the governing body of athletics in Scotland. Jogscotland uses simple, gentle walk/jog/run programmes to encourage everyone to get out and be active! The jogscotland programme is supported by NHS Health Scotland, sportscotland and the Scottish Government Health Department; three national bodies working together to help many people in Scotland adopt a healthier and more active lifestyle. There are many adult course availiable in East Lothian (contact Sue Broadway on 01875 679073 for more details) but Active Schools are keen to get young pupils fit and active, whilst having great fun through the junior programme. There is a great resourse which has lots of fun and energetic warm-ups, games and cool downs as well as a colourful, fun map to chart pupils mileage over the weeks.

Active Schools are offering free training to any volunteer keen to start a junior jogscotland group in their area. The date for the training is:

Wednesday 4th February, 6-8pm at Prestonpans Infant School.

The training will aim to give you experience with the Junior jogscotland resource, allow you to see it in action and  you can also raise any questions or queries with regards to running after school clubs in your area. The training will be relaxed and informal as we are looking to build your confidence in the delivery of this fantastic programme. There will be a brief element of practical activity so please wear suitable clothing.  The session will take place in the gym hall.

Active Schools Win Council Star Award!

The winners of the 2008 Star Awards were announced at a special presentation ceremony held in Brunton Hall, Musselburgh on Thursday 6 November. The Star Awards recognise the achievements of employees and teams in a number of categories. There were over 100 nominations this year and The Active Schools Programme was selected as the winner in the category of Culture and Sport. The Council's Acting Director of Education and Children's Services, Don Ledingham, presented the award. Congratulations to all Active Schools coordinators who have consistently worked hard to achieve set targets to get young people in schools more active! On average per term during 2007/8 36,000 young people were involved in Active Schools Programmes. This is quite an achievement! Well done Active Schools!

New Active Schools Coordinator in Dunbar

Dunbar and West Barns Primary Schools have a new Active Schools Coordinator, Caroline Kaye. She is delighted to be working part-time after having a baby boy, Harry. She worked in the North Berwick cluster for over 3 years and is delighted to be back and looking forward to the new challenge of working in the Dunbar cluster.

Her aim is to get more children more active, more often by offering a wide range of after school classes, organising taster sessions during school, increasing activities during health weeks, recruiting and training volunteers and coaches and targeting specific target groups.

Boxing Hits Musselburgh Grammar

Musselburgh Grammar School is fighting fit with it’s latest sport, boxing.  The school has allocated funding on introducing this exciting Olympic sport into the alternative PE curriculum due to its discipline, hard work and appeal. Sports & Physical Activities Coordinator Robert Woodhead attended a course delivered by the Amateur Boxing Association and has begun delivering sessions to S3 and S4 pupils in addition to an open extra-curricular club.  The school has also developed links with Meadowbank ABC to allow pupils a pathway if they wish to take the sport further.  Robert Woodhead is very enthusiastic and positive about introducing this new activity but would like to reassure parents that at this level in the school it will remain non-contact.  Pupils will have the opportunity to hit the bags, pads and speedball in one of the schools gyms. The emphasis will be on coordination, endurance, technique and most of all fun!  The school is one of the first in Scotland to introduce the ABA’s Boxing Awards.  For more information on Amateur boxing visit www.abae.org.uk
